tuscany-travelSovana has been elected one of the most beautiful medieval towns of Italy. We agree! The wide Piazza del Pretorio as well as the houses and churches have undergone restoration over the years. The residents take great pride in their courtyards and entrance ways with rich flowers and plants contrasting the old lime stone walls with lots of charm. A walk through town is truly a pleasure.

A visit to the medieval village of Sovana can start at one end of the village where the ancient Aldobrandeschi's Fortress, was restored in 1572 by Cosimo I de Medici. It suffered severe damage in the seventeenth century, but is nevertheless breathtaking to see. Decorative and elegant small arms dating back to the thirteenth century can be seen in the highest parts of the fortress walls.

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, or Duomo of Sovana, was constructed in the 10th century. It is of vast architectural importance as its Gothic design in the Romanesque style is rare to find. The church contains frescoes and many sculptures that represent symbols of religious significance that predate the Christian tradition.

  • Our stay at Le Casacce will always be a glorious memory. By the time the trip was over, we already missed our new friend, Linda. We came home filled with tales of the sights we had seen, the excellent food we had eaten and the good times made possible by Tuscan Muse
