Our home in Tuscany is only a very short drive away from Monte Amiata, located in the province of Siena. This beautiful mountain in Tuscany is home to chestnut trees, mushrooms, lumber and a popular ski slope. It is wonderful to spend a day rambling around its trails, experiencing the beauty and tranquility of this piece of Tuscan paradise. For those who would rather ride the mountain by horseback, horseback riding is available.
Monte Amiata was once an active volcano. As a result, there are several thermal spas that can be visited in the area, which are popular among our guests during our workshops in Tuscany or tours of Tuscany. Bagno Vignoni stands out as a favorite spa village.
Monte Amiata also has a tremendous history as one of the most active mines in Italy. It is no longer mined, but it was once the source of income for many Tuscans who toiled daily to bring up the valuable mercury and other ores from its depths. There are former miners living today that have tales to tell about the hardships of working on Monte Amiata. In Santa Fiora, the home of our transportation crew, this plaque commemorates the hard work of the miners who resided in the village. Most every villager in Santa Fiora has a connection to the former Monte Amiata mine.
Should you visit Monte Amiata during the warmer months, it is worth climbing the ski slope to find the breathtaking surprise that awaits you from the overlook at the very top. During a photography workshop, we were amazed to find such a treasure after a leisurely stroll up the slope. You can imagine our surprise to find this lovely statue of the Virgin Mary. This photo was shot by Dave Robinson, the photography workshop instructor.
