Montalcino sits in the heart of the vineyards that produce Brunello wine, one of Italy's best and most favorite of all the wines produced in the world. The town takes its name from a variety of oak tree that once covered the terrain. The very high site of the town offers stunning views over the Asso, Ombrone and Arbia valleys of Tuscany, scattered with silvery olive orchards, vineyards, fields and villages.
The lower slopes of the Montalcino hill itself are dominated by productive vineyards and olive orchards. It is a classic Tuscan hill town surrounded by walls and topped by an almost fairy-tale castle with Paleolithic or Etruscan origins. The hill upon which Montalcino sits has probably been settled since Etruscan times. The first mention of the town are in historical documents dated 814 AD and suggests there was a church here in the 9th century, most likely built by monks associated with the nearby Abbey of Sant' Antimo.
Wine tastings occur regularly in Montalcino in the many shops that offer Brunello for sale. Typically, we venture off to a vineyard and have a wine tasting especially prepared for guests of Tuscan Muse in the wonderful home of Brunello wine and so much more. Come and enjoy a glass of Brunello in its birthplace!
