holiday-in-tuscanyOrbetello is a town on the coast of Tuscany located on a lagoon, and home to an important Natural Reserve. It is an area of Tuscany that was fought over and whose title was transferred over and over again during feudal times. In the Middle Ages it was owned by Aldobrandeschi family, who held it until the 14th century. Next it was acquired by the city of Orvieto. After several battles between the Orsini family of Pitigliano and the town of Orvieto, Orbetello was captured by the Sienese Republic. Later, in the mid-16th century it was part of the Spanish puppet State of Presides, becoming its capital. The Grand Duchy of Tuscany later acquired the area and, from the late 19th century on, Orbetello became part of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy.

The lagoon is beautiful and the deep waters quite mesmerizing. The area has many amazing sights, including the city walls which remain standing from the 5th century BC. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built over an Etruscan-Roman temple and was restructured in 1375. It houses some notable 15th century frescoes. The city is surrounded by evidence of its many owners, including the Spanish Forte delle Saline, the remains of the Roman city of Cosa and the ruins of the Monastery of Sant' Angelo.

  • Our stay at Le Casacce will always be a glorious memory. By the time the trip was over, we already missed our new friend, Linda. We came home filled with tales of the sights we had seen, the excellent food we had eaten and the good times made possible by Tuscan Muse
