San Gimignano

painting-workshopSan Gimignano, is a walled village about halfway between Florence and Siena. It is famous for its medieval architecture and towers that rise above of all the surrounding buildings, offering an impressive view of the city from the surrounding valley.

At the height of its glory, San Gimignano's patrician families built around 72 tower-houses as symbols of their wealth and power. The towers belonged to the many noble families that lived within the city. They were, first of all, a system of defense from enemies, including rival families living within the town. The structure itself made it an almost impregnable fortress: entrance was several feet above ground and accessible only with retractable ladders, the stone walls were hard to scale and difficult to attack. Fourteen of the towers have survived, giving San Gimignano a feudal atmosphere and appearance.

Our guests particularly love the shopping in San Gimignano. Although opinions vary, some believe that the best gelato can be found here as well. The "Gelateria di Piazza" located in the central Piazza della Cisterna, boasts that it serves "The World's Best Gelato". We tend to agree!

  • Our stay at Le Casacce will always be a glorious memory. By the time the trip was over, we already missed our new friend, Linda. We came home filled with tales of the sights we had seen, the excellent food we had eaten and the good times made possible by Tuscan Muse
